Overview

What a Gas Safe registered engineer does

By law, work on gas appliances and gas pipework in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Registration is not a badge, it is a legal requirement, and it is checkable. N Monk Plumbing & Heating is registered under number 17648, and we are happy for that number to be displayed and verified.

Our gas work covers boiler installation, repair and servicing, gas pipework and supply alterations, gas safety checks, and the gas side of heating system installations and upgrades. We work on natural gas only, not LPG, and our work is domestic.

Behind the registration sit ACS, G3 for unvented hot water cylinders, Water Regulations and City & Guilds qualifications, with Sam holding an NVQ, and Neil's 37 years of experience in the trade.

Who it is for

Homeowners and landlords in Broxbourne, Ware, Epping, Harlow and the surrounding towns who need gas appliance work, a safety check, or alterations to gas pipework.

When you need it

Any new or replacement gas appliance, a suspected gas fault, a boiler that keeps locking out, alterations to gas pipework, or an annual safety check and service.

Why registration matters

Unregistered gas work is illegal, uninsurable and dangerous. Combustion performance, flue integrity and ventilation are not things that can be assessed by eye.

Left as it is

What is at stake with gas work

Gas faults do not announce themselves reliably. The consequences of getting it wrong sit at the extreme end of what can happen in a home.

Combustion faults are invisible

A boiler that appears to run normally can still be burning incorrectly. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer with the correct instruments can tell you whether combustion and gas rate are within specification.

Flue faults let products of combustion into the house

A damaged, badly routed or incorrectly terminated flue is one of the most serious defects there is, and it is not visible from inside the room.

Unregistered work voids cover

Gas work carried out by anyone not registered is illegal, may invalidate your home insurance and manufacturer warranties, and becomes a problem again at the point of sale or a tenancy check.

Undersized or poor pipework degrades everything

Insufficient gas supply pipework causes lockouts, poor performance and appliances that never reach their rated output, whatever their age.

Common mistakes we are called out to

  • Letting a general handyman disconnect or move a gas appliance.
  • Assuming an appliance is safe because it lights and produces heat.
  • Blocking or covering ventilation openings during building or insulation work.
  • Ignoring repeated lockouts and simply resetting the appliance.
  • Never asking to see the engineer's Gas Safe registration.

In detail

Gas work in detail

The specific areas of gas work we carry out, and what is checked in each.

Appliance installation and replacement

Installing or replacing a gas appliance means more than connecting it. The gas supply must be capable of delivering the required volume at acceptable pressure, the flue must be correctly routed and terminated with the required clearances, and ventilation must meet the appliance's requirements.

Relocating an appliance usually raises the same three questions in a harder form: can the supply reach it at the right size, can the flue terminate compliantly from the new position, and is there a suitable route for condensate. These are settled at survey rather than discovered on installation day.

Gas pipework and supply

Gas pipework is sized according to the appliance load and the length and complexity of the run. Undersized pipework is one of the most common legacy problems we find, particularly where an appliance has been upgraded over the years without the supply being reviewed.

Pipework must be correctly supported, protected where it passes through structure, sleeved where required, and tested for tightness. Alterations for kitchen changes, extensions or appliance moves are all work for a registered engineer.

Safety checks, combustion testing and servicing

A gas safety check assesses appliance operation, gas tightness, flue performance, ventilation and combustion. It is a measurement exercise using calibrated instruments, which is why appearances are not a substitute.

Servicing keeps appliances running correctly, maintains most manufacturers' warranty conditions and catches wear before it causes a breakdown. Gas boiler servicing starts from £90 + VAT with any parts on top.

Where we find a defect, you are told plainly what it is, how serious it is and what the remedy costs as a fixed price.

Ventilation, flueing and building work

Building work is a frequent cause of gas problems after the event: an airbrick covered by a new render or insulation, a flue terminal enclosed by an extension, or a boiler boxed in without the clearances the manufacturer requires.

If you are planning building work near an appliance or a flue, raise it before the work is done. Correcting a flue termination that has been built around is far more expensive than planning around it in the first place.

Landlords, homeowners and what we do not cover

We work for homeowners and for landlords with domestic property across Broxbourne, Ware, Epping, Harlow and the surrounding towns. Fixed price quoting makes approving work simple for managing agents as well as owners.

We work on natural gas only and do not work on LPG. Our work is domestic rather than commercial.
